Weed barrier should be used under all stone mulch to keep weeds down. It is not recommended for use under bark and wood mulch. Good quality fabric is determined by its ability to keep down weeds verses how well it lets water and oxygen through. While a really thick impermeable permanent weed barrier may do a great job at keeping weeds down, it may not allow much water or oxygen through to the soil. Moisture or oxygen pass-through is not important if there are no plants nearby, so a heavier weed barrier is recommended for these areas.

We offer two choices of fabric; we sell approximately equal amounts of each. The 2 ounce fabric is relatively thin and has excellent oxygen and water pass though rates, while offering good quality weed growth resistance. When choosing a lightweight fabric we highly recommend the spun bound versus a fabric patterned plastic weave. The spun bound is much more effective at letting water and oxygen through and is very strong given its lightweight and because of it tight spacing between fibers resists weed growth.

We also carry a 4.1 ounce heavy duty weed barrier for greater durability and weed protection as compared to the 2 ounce. The heavy duty is a good choice under stone mulch, decks, and behind retaining walls.
Additional weed protection can be had with the black poly sheeting. It can be used in areas where no water or air is needed to pass-through. The material offers the most weed protection available. The material is resistant decay if there is a substantial layer of stone on top of it which keeps all sunlight from reaching it.

Installation

Roll out as needed and use your mulch to weigh it down prior to adding the rest of the remaining mulch.  To install around a plant, cut an X in the fabric where a plant is located; poke the plant through the X, and folding the fabric back up to the plant stem. With that in mind, you can see that it would be important to have a weed barrier that lets water and air though easily yet still keeps the weeds down.
