Washed Sand

Washed Sand is the same thing as mason sand and play sand. It is clean from dust and debris, weighs about 2700 lbs. per cubic yard and is tan in color. It is best to use this sand in places where you do not want any moisture retention like under brick walks. This sand is also what is normally used for beaches in our area.

This sand is exceptionally clean, when kids play in it they will have minimal residue left on them. This is due to the type of cleaning process this sand goes through - beware of any other local sources of sand if it is to be used in a sandbox.

Construction Sand (2NS)

Construction sand is compactable and is composed of a wide range of sized sharp particles so it will remain compacted. Compaction involves reducing pore spaces between particles. Sharper particles fit together better than round particles, and a variety of particle sizes make it so the smaller particles nicely fill in the space between the larger particles. Sand composed of round particles will not compact; sand composed of mostly the same size particles will also result in too many spaces between the particles even after mechanical compaction.

It is commonly used under flatwork such as block constructed patios and walkways. Compacting it provides a stable base and a very flat surface to set the blocks or bricks. The surface is likely to remain flat even through winter thaws assuming there is sufficient drainage. A final layer of sand is spread before the special brick or blocks are set into place.
