Large Block Wall Construction using Geo-Grid

Larger walls require geo-grid to be laid between the blocks going back into the hill. The geo-grid is a pvc coated material which comes in rolls. The small rolls are 6’ x 131’. The basic design principle is to use geo-grid every 1 1/2 feet up on, at a minimum, 70 percent of the wall. On a 6’ high wall you would use 4’ long pieces going back into the hill at heights of 1½’ at 3’ and at 4½’. On a 8’ high wall you would use 6’ long pieces going back into the hill at heights of 1½’, 3’, 4½’, 6’, and 7’. The rolls need to be cut every 4’ or 6’ and rolled out away from the front of the wall, back into the hill. In other words, do not unroll the rolls along the length of the wall, individual 4’ or 6’ pieces need to be cut and placed lenghwise back into the hill. The grid is put down on top of the row of blocks about 1" back from the face for straight blocks or back to the bevel for beveled faced blocks so you cant see the geo-grid from the front.

Backfilling Construction Basics:
If the wall is constructed in a subsoil which is something other than very well drained sand; use 6" to 12" of compacted crushed stone underneath wall, use, 6" to 12" of drainage stone or crushed stone behind wall. Install 4" corragated drain tile with a sock behind wall at the base. Every 50 feet use a tee in the drain pipe and run it out through the front of the wall to assist drainage. Use a weed barrier or filter cloth type material between the stone and the subsoil. If constructing the wall in a very well drained sand you can skip the stone behind the wall and install the weed barrier type fabric directly on the backside of the wall blocks.

Typical Material List for Larger Wall:

Blocks Glue for Cap Blocks Crushed stone
Cap Blocks 4" Corrugated Drain Pipe Tee Weed Barrier / Filter Cloth
Geo-Grid 4" Corrugated Drain Pipe w/Sock
